What exactly is a ghost?
Also called spirits, wraiths,
phantoms, visions, shades, specters, haunts and apparitions, we can
loosely define a ghost as being some paranormal aspect of the
physical form and/or mental presence that appears to exist apart
from the original physical form. The word appears is
integral to the definition. Most ghostly encounters are evaluated by
the five physical senses alone. This makes most information about
ghosts subjective (dependent upon an observer's limited
perception). One must be careful about drawing conclusions based
upon subjective evidence.
Objective evidence (dependent upon
external, unbiased measurements that are equally obtainable by all)
is the pillar of scientific knowledge and most commonly accepted by
all.
In keeping with the definition, a ghost can
be the presence of something that was once conscious or unconscious.
For example, people can see ghosts of humans and ghosts of
automobiles. They can see ghosts of dogs and the leash that they are
being walked with. So basically they can see ghosts of both living
and non-living things. What does this mean? How can we break it down
from there? To get started, I have listed the most common ghostly
activity into five categories, or ghostly classifications, all based
upon the research and work that has been documented over that last
several hundred centuries.
As you learn about, and research ghosts in
a systematic way, you'll soon learn how strange some of this ghostly
activity can be. You are bound to encounter some really bizarre
situations and even some that are truly mind boggling. But these
types of situations are what makes researching and investigating
ghosts so much fun! Whenever you go to a presumably haunted
location, expect to expect the unexpected. Most of the time
(realistically) you will go to a location where there is absolutely
no activity. That is normal but don't despair. Other times you may
go to a presumably haunted location and it can be loaded with tons
of activity. It's up to you and your team to decide whether or not
the activity can be classified as paranormal or not. Part of this
learning process is to determine what type of activity is taking
place.
Below are both famous ghostly photo's and
photo's that have been submitted to us for this section of the
website. Keep in mind that we in no way guarantee that what you see
in any of these photo's are actual ghosts. Some of these photo's may
have rational explanations as to what you see such as dirt, bugs,
scratches, lights, etc. but we leave it up to you to decide what is
contained within these pictures.
